An Internet hoax that began in the 1990s as a joke encouraging people to believe that the city does not actually exist remains connected with this bustling town. However, over 300,000 people currently live in this university city, which was founded in 1214 as a way to guard the passage through the Teutoburg Forest. It became a well-known city for creating linen and today still has a strong manufacturing presence. The first spinning mill came to the city in the mid-1800s after the railway line was constructed. Bielefeld became the headquarters for the fighting command of the British Army of the Rhine after World War II.

Location: A Gem Amidst the Teutoburg Forest

Located in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region in North-Rhine Westphalia in Germany, the historical center lies just north of the Teutoburg Forest. The modern city sprawls into the opposite side of the forest and hills. There is easy access to the town by two major autobahns, A2 and A33, which intersect in the southeastern part of town. Bielefeld also is served by one of Germany's ICE high-speed railroad lines.

Business: Cultural and Economic Heart of Westphalia

The town hosts numerous internationally operating companies as well as a university and several colleges that have a combined total of 35,000 students. In the middle of the city lies the Stadthalle Bielefeld, one of the best German conference venues. Household names to the city are Oetker, ThyssenKrupp, and Schüco.

Culture: Walk Among Beautiful Historic and Modern Architecture

One of the major sights is the Sparrenburg Castle, which was constructed by Count Ludwig von Ravensberg between 1240 and 1250. It features a 37-meter high tower and catacombs for public viewing. Every year, it hosts the annual Sparrenburgfest, a medieval festival. There are other architectural delights in the city, including the Old City Hall and City Theater, both of which were built in 1904 and were inspired by a variety of architectural styles. There are also beautiful old churches in Gothic style, including the Alstädter Nicolaikirche and the Neustädter Marienkirche.

Activities: Hiking through the Teutoburg Forest

The Teutoburg Forest dominates much of Bielefeld's city and surrounding areas, providing the perfect picturesque backdrop for running, hiking, climbing, and cycling. There are several trails, circular paths, and scenic routes from which to choose. The city's Kesselbrink square has one of Germany's largest skate parks, which attracts many skateboarders to the area.
