Fürth – A City Steeped in History and Culture
Location: A city within several cities
Situated in northern Bavaria in the Middle Franconia District of Germany, Fürth is strategically located, neighbouring Nuremburg and close to Bamberg and Erlangen. The cities create one of the state’s 11 metropolitan regions. Visitors can easily visit other nearby cities by either road or rail using public transport.
Business: A leader in solar power and toy manufacturing
Fürth is mostly known for its solar power collection and for being a leader in the toy industry. A former landfill at Atzenhof serves as a current location for some of its solar power industry, and the local toy-making industry includes small craft shops and large companies. A mail-order company, Quelle, the largest in Europe, is headquartered here, together with other large companies that have the head offices, such as Grundig, Siemens AG, and Uvex.
Culture: Food to warm the heart
To experience German culture through its cuisine, head for the Gustavstrasse district of the city, located in the Old Town, where you will find numerous restaurants and gastro-pubs serving heart-warming traditional cuisine and local beers. Visitors looking for unique souvenirs can find many items at the City Center Mall, the numerous retail shops downtown, and at the open market. To appreciate local history, check out the Jewish Museum together with the Fürth Radio Museum and the Stadtmuseum (City Museum).
Activities: On nature's trail
A popular trail is the Nature Trail for Urban Ecology, close to ten kilometres long. Visitors can see various natural habitats, and many of the plants and animals that make the area home. The Stadtpark has many walking paths, benches, duck ponds and a playground, and is a relaxing place to spend an afternoon. A number of churches of various denominations are open to the public, and many festivals, such as Fürth Festival, take place throughout the year.
