Kleve - Discover the local history
The town supposedly got its nickname 'Swan Town' from a medieval legend. An unidentified rescuer in a swan-drawn boat came to rescue a damsel in distress from the castle tower. The Lohengrin fountain in the town is meant to depict this story. Schwanenburg Castle itself, was the residence of the Duke of Cleves in the 16th century. Its most famous resident was Anne of Cleves, daughter of John III, Duke of Cleves and wife of King Henry VIII. The rich history of the town and the surrounding area coupled with the rolling scenery, natural landscape and outdoor pursuits on offer make the town a favorite for visitors from near and far. The town was originally spelled with a 'C' - Cleve. The inhabitants have campaigned to return the original spelling to the town.
