Meiningen – Culture comes alive in theatrical town
The southern city of Meiningen is steeped in culture, history and the arts. From the intricate décor of the city centre buildings to the numerous museums, which hold Thuringia’s largest art collection, this is a place, which attracts academics, artists, and thinkers alike. The grand Elisabethenburg Palace is a testament to the splendour of the city’s royal past–former visitors included Johannes Brahms and Max Reger, and a collection of their original compositions are still on display today. The city’s musical heritage is maintained today through the popular Meiningen Court Orchestra, which was founded in 1692. Between the museums, concert halls and palaces, Meiningen is a tranquil place, with beautiful city gardens creating a sense of wellness. It is no wonder that creative types have been coming here for inspiration for more than 400 years.
Location: Meiningen–in the middle of the action
Meiningen is located almost directly in the middle of three of Germany’s main cities–Nuremberg, Frankfurt and Leipzig are all within 200 km of the city centre, while Berlin is around 400 km to the north east. Autobahn 71 connects the city with the rest of Germany, and the neighbouring Czech Republic to the south.

Business: An artistic tradition
Meiningen’s reputation as a cultural centre has helped the city to develop its own brand of tourism. Artists and academics flock to the city to take in a play, an opera, or a classical concert, and many choose to move there to take advantage of the city’s artistic resources.
Culture: Its everywhere you look
In Meiningen, everywhere you look there is a story, a performance or a piece of German history. Culture vultures should make the Art House (or Kunsthaus) their first stop–this iconic building runs regular exhibitions of classic and contemporary works of art, and hosts a number of visiting artists. The Elisabethenburg Palace features a range of artworks dating from the 17th century to the 19th century, and includes a number of unique collections, which are worth seeing.
Activities: Get involved in the action
Artistic Meiningen is sure to inspire, so why not get involved with one of the local dramatic, musical or artistic workshops while you are there. The beautiful Thuringia countryside is just a few kilometres away, and eternally popular with hikers and ramblers for its stunning scenery and gentle hills.
