Menton – The Pearl of France
This part of France has been inhabited since pre-history, but in the 1300s is when this area started making history under the rule of Monaco. Later it became part of France and then even a free state. Finally, the city returned to France in the 1800s. The first tourism came after James Henry Bennett's writing caused it to be a haven for those suffering from tuberculosis looking for a place to relax and heal. Tourism took off after that as the town began to grow, building luxurious hotels, palaces, and villas. Today its 28, 000 residents enjoy famous gardens and beautiful cathedrals and churches along the lovely French Riviera.
Location: Along the Franco-Italian Border
Located on the Mediterranean Sea, Menton sits right at the border between France and Italy. It is just across from the town of Ventimiglia. It is part of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France, and the warm climate makes it perfect for growing lemons and tangerines.

Culture: Popular Museums, Churches, and Stunning Gardens
Menton has a number of cultural venues that you don't want to miss when you visit. Regional Pre-Historic museum has a large collection of archaeological finds as well as an exhibit based on the finding of the Menton Man. The Beaux-Arts Museum is located inside what was once the home of the Princes Grimaldi of Monaco, and now has art ranging from the 13th to 20th centuries. Cathedrals and churches are also an important part of culture and history here. Known as the Russian Church, the Menton Orthodox Church was erected on orders of the Grand Duchess Anastasia herself in an area that was once blossoming with Russian residents. Its stunning architecture captures Russia perfectly. Saint-Michel Archangel Basilica in its baroque style brings in 100, 000 visitors a year. The exterior includes a bell tower and colored cobbles forming the Grimaldi coat of arms. There is no doubt, though, that the most well-known feature of this city is the many beautiful public and private gardens world renowned for their appearances. The Maria Serena Garden is right on the seafront and has been there since 1880. This garden boasts amazing sites such as palm trees and other tropical plants.

Activities: Festivals and Oceanside Activities
The biggest attraction here is no doubt the ocean. The Mediterranean offers beautiful blue views for miles and warming, calming rays. Water sports are quite popular with water skiing, wake boarding, and jet skiing being some of the most exciting ways to spend your vacation. Kayak excursions can also be a way to try something new while in this amazing city. For your time away from the water, there are plenty of other options, including one of the many festivals that occur here each year. The Lemon Festival is a beloved event that lasts several days and includes music in the streets and a yearly theme. Some past themes have included India and Disney. There is also a Christmas festival held annually in Casino Gardens.
