Prien am Chiemsee - the Bavarian Seaside
Location: Gateway to Lake Chiemsee
This climactic health resort is located on Lake Chiemsee in upper Bavaria about 120 kilometers from Munich and 65 kilometers from Salzburg. These major cities provide the closest airports. It has a train station, which is on the Munich-Salzburg railway line with frequent trains. It is also easily accessible by automobile, and many visitors arrive by boat.
Culture: From a Monastery to a Castle
The Pfaffkirche church features beautiful frescoes on the ceiling painted by Johann Baptist Zimmerman, and there is also 12th century frescoes in one of the chapels at Urschalling. For more art, you can visit the old town hall that features regional and international artwork. One of the main attractions near Prien is the castle at Herrenchiemsee on Herreninsel. It was a redesign of the old monastery on the island and inspired by Versailles, although it was never completed. The Augustinian Canons Museum features the private rooms of King Ludwig II and an art gallery.
