Nestled on the western shores of Lake Constance, Radolfzell is a hidden treasure that can proudly keep up with more popular lakeside towns like Friedrichshafen and Lindau. It is home to a well-preserved old town that is worth exploring, and with cultivated traditions and customs offers interesting things to learn. You can see historic streets and buildings, indulge in finest regional cuisine and wines, and find inner peace in the nature protection areas on the Mettnau Peninsula at the gates of the town. Here, you find untouched spots that cannot be found elsewhere around the lake yet are really worth seeing. A city trip to Radolfzell surely is unlike any other, yet worth wile all the same.

Location: On the lower lake of Lake Constance

Radolfzell is beautifully located on the western shores of Lake Constance, halfway between the cities of Singen and Konstanz. From here, all destinations around the lake as well as the famous Rhine Falls in Schaffhausen are conveniently reachable by road and rail, or by all means of public transport. The protected Mettnau Peninsula is part of the city, offering a recreational area in the east of Radolfzell.

Business: Environmental awareness and lingerie

The small town is not only an important destination for holidaymakers, but also a popular industrial location for companies from many different branches. Some of the most famous brand names here are Schiesser, a lingerie producer, and numerous environmental organizations, amongst them the Lake Constance Foundation (Bodensee Stiftung).

Culture: Combine sightseeing with nature adventures!

The small town offers a wonderful conglomerate of historic buildings, traditional cuisine, and modern tourism. Stroll through the old town and see the Obertor city gate, the 18th Griener Winkel houses, and the Stadtgarten park. Numerous restaurants and inns invite to enjoy local cuisine in a rustic ambience, and bargain-hunters can shop to their heart’s content in cosy boutiques. Numerous churches dominate the townscape, amongst them the impressive Radolfzell Minster from the 15th century. As everywhere in the region, carnival, or Fasnacht, is quite important here. So try and visit in February to see the historic costumes and figurines on the parades.

Activities: Mettnau Peninsula at your feet

Naturally, one must explore Lake Constance when in the region. You can either make Radolfzell your jumping off point for visits of the larger cities around the lake, like Konstanze or Schaffhausen, or you discover the beauty of the western part of the lake at the doorsteps of the city. Enjoy hiking or photography tours on the Mettnau Peninsula, a protected area where rare species of birds hatch. The Visitors Centre at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology informs about birds and insects in an interactive media room, whereas the NABU Nature Protection Centre Mettnau offers guided tours across the peninsula throughout the year, teaching everything there is to know about the protected flora and fauna.
