La Barcelona actual crece en lealtad hacia su pasado. Los barceloneses están profundamente orgullosos de su legado histórico y cultural, una circunstancia que ha convertido a la ciudad en uno de los focos artísticos e intelectuales más destacados del continente. Las Artes Escénicas siempre han servido como plataforma y medio de expresión inteligente y popular, incluso en tiempos de censura, cuando peor cotiza la creatividad. El ansia expresivo y un deseo de democratización cultural, paralelo al que asomaba en el Gobierno de España por aquel entonces, propició el nacimiento del Teatre Lliure. Estalló un clamor popular a partir de nombres ilustres de directores, actores y técnicos de teatro, todos ellos fundadores y movidos por la misma causa común (teatro para todos), como Fabià Puigserver, Lluís Pasqual, Muntsa Alcañiz, Imma Colomer, Lluís Homar, Xavi Clot o Ros Ribas.
Ellos y otros tantos implicados gremiales más protagonizaron la primera apertura en plena transición española (2 de diciembre de 1976). Desde aquella primera representación (Camí de Nit, de Lluís Pasqual) en un modesto local alquilado del barrio de Gràcia, el Teatre Lliure ha ganado adeptos y espacio de trabajo permanentemente, con el fin de propagar su idea romántica y artística sobre lo que consideran un servicio público y artesano. Durante estos casi 36 años de vida, el teatro ha madurado en libertad, espontaneidad e independencia, aunque ayudado por colaboraciones y subvenciones públicas indispensables en su pervivencia.
La iniciativa ganó difusión al ampliar su espacio creativo con dos nuevas salas en la majestuosa montaña de Montjuic, un alto que presume de una perspectiva visual única sobre el centro de la ciudad. Si así lo desea, podrá indagar el espectáculo natural reservando alguna noche en uno de los hoteles más próximos, aunque quizá prefiera un hotel situado en un entorno más bullicioso. La más significativa de las salas alojadas en la vieja morada de la Consejería de Agricultura fue abierta en 2001, destacando por su modernidad escénica y una capacidad muy superior a la acostumbrada desde los modestos inicios (736 espectadores). En homenaje perenne al director Fabià Puigserver, personaje protagonista en la historia del Teatre Lliure y fallecido en 1991, la sala más ambiciosa está bautizada con su nombre. Un año después, fue estrenado el pequeño pero acogedor Espai Lliure, con aforo para doscientas personas, y que se está consolidando como alternativa para otros espectáculos minoritarios promovidos desde la Fundación.

Precisamente este espacio original de la calle Montseny ha sido renovado y reabierto recientemente (2010), manteniéndose como un lugar histórico en la creación y desarrollo del Teatre Lliure hasta lo que es y significa actualmente. Tras la ampliación, su sala alberga representaciones para una audiencia de 250 espectadores.
