Panthéon

Situé dans le 5e arrondissement de Paris, dans le quartier latin qu'il domine de son dôme, le Panthéon rassemble dans sa crypte les tombeaux de grands personnages ayant marqué l'histoire de la République Française. Conçu à l'origine (1758) pour abriter les reliques de Sainte Geneviève, l'édifice, dessiné par Soufflot, devient à partir de 1791, date de la mort de Mirabeau, un panthéon national. Quatremère de Quincy en modifie l'agencement pour transformer l'église en un monument laïc à la mémoire des grands hommes de la nation. Mais le Panthéon vaut aussi, et peut-être surtout, par les nombreux attraits du quartier dans lequel il se situe.

Le panthéon national

Le Panthéon est un édifice néoclassique, qui témoigne des choix architecturaux et esthétiques de la fin du XVIIIe s. et la période des Lumières. A l'origine, Soufflot avait prévu un mélange d'éléments architecturaux gothiques, byzantins et classiques ; mais ce sont aujourd'hui surtout les éléments empruntés à l'architecture antique qui dominent : fronton triangulaire, colonnes corinthiennes, péristyle.
L'iconographie du Panthéon témoigne de la vocation de l'édifice : on trouve ainsi sur le fronton une représentation de la République donnant au peuple la liberté. Fidèle à l'héritage des Lumières, le Panthéon célèbre la connaissance et l'on trouve représentés de grands savants, des philosophes comme Voltaire et Rousseau, des artistes comme David et des écrivains comme Corneille. Les peintures intérieures sont de Bonnat, d'Antoine-Jean Gros et de Puvis de Chavanne.
Parmi les grands personnages dont les cendres reposent dans la vaste crypte du Panthéon, on peut citer Voltaire, Rousseau, Victor Hugo, Jaurès, Gambetta et Jean Moulin.

A proximité du Panthéon

Le charme du quartier est indéniable, même si le Panthéon lui-même peut paraître un peu froid et écrasant. Sorbonne, lycée Henri IV et Ecole Normale Supérieure confèrent au quartier latin son animation estudiantine bien agréable. Le jardin des Plantes et le Museum d'histoire naturelle sont à deux pas, tout comme l'Institut du Monde Arabe.
Le Palais du Luxembourg, siège du Sénat, et ses splendides jardins, est également tout proche, de même que le Musée de Cluny, avec ses remarquables collections du Moyen Age. On ne manquera pas la rue Mouffetard et son célèbre marché, qui laisse encore imaginer un peu de l'atmosphère du Paris d'autrefois. Enfin, de nombreux petits restaurants bon marché invitent à une halte sympathique à l'heure du déjeuner.

Un hôtel près du Panthéon

Le touriste qui souhaite profiter du quartier latin y trouvera un choix étendu d'hôtels pour toutes les bourses. Il suffit de consulter l'un des nombreux sites de réservation d'hôtels à Paris : on pourra opter pour un hébergement luxueux à proximité du Panthéon ou du Luxembourg. Mais on pourra préférer un petit hôtel typique dans une rue sympathique du quartier latin.
De quoi être à pied d'oeuvre dès le matin pour profiter des stands du marché Mouffetard ou pour aller faire une petite promenade revigorante dans les jardins du Luxembourg. Le boulevard Saint Michel, bruissant d'agitation, invite au shopping. Si vous aimez les livres, vous êtes au bon endroit : c'est le quartier des librairies! Et si vous n'avez pas trouvé votre bonheur, faites donc un tour chez les bouquinistes qui tiennent leurs stands le long des quais de la Seine.
