Formerly a part of French Equatorial Africa, the largest city in the Central African Republic is also its nation’s capital. It served as an administration centre during the French colonial era and continues to be the political centre of the CAR. Bangui is located along the northern banks of the Ubangi River, which marks the border to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The city’s landmark sites are the big triumphal arch which is dedicated to Bokassa, the colourful central market and the Presidential Bokassa Palace.
The most notable highlights of Bangui include the Boganda Museum and the Cathédrale Notre-Dame in Bangui, which is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bangui. The city is best accessible by the Bangui M'Poko International Airport, which handles most of the country's international trade, as well. The neighbouring Congolese town of Zongo sits opposite the river from Bangui, and is accessible via River ferries which are also sailing to Brazzaville.
