Asmara is the capital of Eritrea. Home to the Eritrean National Museum, the modern city is known for its early 20th century Art Deco buildings and the many Italian inspired colonial villas and mansions, one of the most prominent examples being the World Bank Building. Further architectural highlights include the Enda Mariam Orthodox Church, the neo-Romanesque St Joseph's Roman Catholic Cathedral, the neoclassical Governor's Palace and the Al Khulafa Al Rashiudin Mosque.
There are several highlights in and around Asmara well worth a visit - Most notably the University of Asmara and a 19th century fort, the “Forte Baldissera”. Asmara is served by Asmara International Airport and is connected to the seaport of Massawa by the Eritrean Railway. With large national companies like Eritrean Airlines and the Eritrean Telecommunications Corporation boasting headquarters in Asmara, there are quite a number of comfortable hotels available on HRS, catering to the needs of business travellers and tourists alike.
