Located in the Horn of Africa, Somalia remains a country troubled by unrest as the internationally recognized Transitional Federal Government is only able to control a small portion of the country. Bordering on Djibouti in the northwest, Kenya in the southwest, the Gulf of Aden with Yemen in the north, Ethiopia in the west and the Indian Ocean in the east, Somalia is the African country with the longest coastline. If the changes implemented by the newly elected government in 2010 bear fruit, Somalia could well be one of highlights of Africa again.
With cave paintings dating back to 9000 BC, like the so called Laas Geel complex, as well as other archeological highlights such as the stone implements from the Jalelo site located in northern Somalia, many tombs, ruined cities, pyramidal structures and impressive stone walls such as the Wargaade Wall, Somalia is every archaeologists’ dream and could well be a touristic highlight in the future.
