In 1916 Ole Kirk Christiansen started as a carpenter and woodcutter. He made ironing boards and stepladders but also began to make wooden toys. His first success was a yo-yo in 1932 and in 1934 his factory got the name Lego - which is an abbreviation for Leg godt - play well. In 1960 the wood stocks of the factory burnt down and thereafter Lego concentrated on making plastic toys. First and foremost in the form of the legendary Lego bricks which were marketed for the first time in 1948. The Lego factory established its own airport Billund Lufthavn in 1962. Lego also created LEGOLAND which opened in 1968.
