The name "Walsall" is believed to be derived from the Celtic "Walh Halh", meaning "valley of the Celtic speakers." In the early days Walsall was known as a market town, and was considerably bigger than Birmingham, but with the construction of a main railway line Birmingham's growth far exceeded Walsall. The city became known for its fine leather products, which brought many traders to the inns and hotels of Walsall. Walsall Arboretum opened in 1874, and over the years, many events have been held there. The Arboretum Illuminations is an annual event, which brings people from the surrounding area to the restaurants and hotels of Walsall.
The New Art Gallery in Walsall opened in 2000, and contains many works by contemporary artists as well as paintings by Renoir, Van Gogh, Monet and Turner. There are future redevelopment projects on the board, with new office, apartments, leisure facilities and hotels in Walsall, the cost in the range of one billion pounds. There also is a transportation package, which will bring better train and bus services to the existing infrastructure to be completed this year. These projects will help bolster the economy, and bring in people to explore the galleries and hotels of Walsall.
