Located along the Atlantic coastline, in the province of South Holland in The Netherlands, it forms the south western point of the Ranstaad. People started building here around 900 A.D. Regular flooding was a problem and this forced residents to develop the now famous Dutch skills for building damns and dykes to protect cities from water. It was largely destroyed during World War II, and after the war there was a flurry to rebuilding activity lading to experimental building styles.
