This capital city in Sweden sprawls across 14 islands on Lake Malaren, and is linked up via at least 50 different bridges. A bit over 2 million people live in this stunning city. Stockholm was founded between 1187 and 1250, and has stood as the focal point of Sweden's culture, politics and economy ever since. Today the city is well known to be a busy cosmopolitan destination with a mix of modern buildings and ancient monuments. You can use HRS to book one of the best hotels in Stockholm – maybe even one with a spectacular view overlooking the lake.
Unless you have already stayed in one of Stockholm's hotels, you may be surprised to hear that the city is built on several islands surrounding a harbour. In fact, the old town of the city actually has its own island, Gamla Stan. Wander around the colourful streets and you may just find the site of the 'Stockholm bloodbath', a notorious chapter in the Swedish history. But don't worry, Stockholm's hotels and Swedish hospitality are far from brutal nowadays. Take a walking tour of the old city centre, or even better, go on one of the boat trips around the city. One of the most popular is one called “Under the bridges of Stockholm”. It departs from a point just opposite the Royal Castle, so it should be easy to find. Stockholm is a city of art, and you can see it at every turn – even the subway stations are decorated in a spectacular style.
If you can, take a trip to the harbour early in the morning for stunning views of Stockholm (hotels often face the harbour so you might not even have to leave the warmth of your room). HRS can help you find great value at any Stockholm hotel, from the Radisson and Nordic Sea, and all the rest. For daytime entertainment visit the famous Vasa Museum, dedicated to a sunken ship that was famously raised in the 1960s from the city's harbour. Stockholm is a city you won't forget. You do have to get here first though, and you are in luck, Stockholm has some excellent transport options. The Arlanda Airport is Stockholm's main airport, situated about 40 kilometres north of the city. The Arlanda Express train will whisk you right into town in just a few minutes. Pick up a Stockholm Card, and you will have free access to most of the museums in the city as well as be able to ride all of the extensive public transit for free.
