Everybody needs some R&R. With today’s fast-paced lifestyle, sometimes we need to take a step back and relax. Take relaxation to the next level in Bad Schandau. One of the oldest spa towns in Europe, this charming German town will refresh, rejuvenate, and pamper you like royalty. Enjoy a quiet evening poolside, experience a relaxing massage at one of the best massage parlors, take a dip in a hot tub, or enjoy a glass of one with a loved one. Bad Schandau is here to cater to your every whim.
By the bank of the River Elbe at the mouth of the Kirnitzsch valley, lies the little town of Bad Schandau. Located in southern Saxony, it is six kilometers from the Czech border, and 33 kilometers south-east of Dresden. It consists of what is known as Old Town Schandau and five newer boroughs: Krippen, Postelwitz, Schmillea, Ostrau, and Porschdorf. A summer health resort since the 19th century, Bad Schandau is the smallest German town with its own tram service.
A resort town with a quaint, rustic charm, Bad Schandau offers the ultimate when it comes to rest and relaxation. One of Germany’s oldest health resorts, it is home to luxurious spas, a shopping district with some of Europe’s best-known brands, charming restaurants and cafes, and a lively center. What makes the town even more picturesque is it’s medieval past. Walking around Old Town Bad Schandau brings you right back into the Renaissance, with its broad archways, cobblestone streets, and market square. Sights worth seeing in Old Town are the Sendig Fountain, built in 1896; and the town hall, built in 1863. St. John’s Church, built in 1679, is also a sight to see. It boasts a baroque skylight turret, stained glass windows, and an altar made of sandstone by sculptor Hans Walther.
There’s nothing more relaxing than being close to nature. Take a timeout from the spas and go on a trip to the Botanical Garden (Pflanzengarten Bad Schandau), which houses over 1,500 species of plants. The Saxon Switzerland National Park is also a must-see, with its sandstone formations, sprawling forests, and wildlife. Finally, the Lichtenhainer Waterfall will cure whatever kind of ennui you have, with it’s beautiful scenery and the sound of falling water.
