This charming Bavarian town is filled with palaces, parks and museums that detail the long and rich history of the town. Archeological evidence shows that settlers came to Aschaffenburg as far back as the Stone Age. The Frankish mayors chose to build a castle on the site of the Roman Castra, which is how the town became known as Aschaffenburg, or castle at the ash tree river. In the Middle Ages, Saint Boniface built a chapel to Saint Martin, as well as bringing in a Benedictine monastery, which helped to build the town. There are many beautiful historical buildings in town, including a replica of a Roman town house and the famous Schloss Johannisburg, which was built in the early 1600s.

It features the State Collections and a palace museum with important historical artifacts and artworks. A unique site in town is the Roman town house replica, Pompejanum, which was based upon a house found in Pompeii. The Stiftskirche Aschenburg was originally founded in 974, although most of the current building dates from the 12th century. It features important artworks and relics.
