The history of Bad Harzburg can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Legend says that about 780, Charlemagne built a chapel on the Burgberg hill that overlooked the town, after claiming the area during the Saxon Wars. The area was a significant site in the early Middle Ages, with a college, canons, and a castle built to fortify and protect the region. A saline water well was developed in the mid-1600s to extract salt, and the brine has been used since 1852 for medicinal purposes. Today, it is a popular health and wellness spa destination that features seven therapeutic springs.
