Overlooking the seafront and receiving a pleasant cool breeze in the summer are many bars, cafes, and restaurants, where you can while away the days and nights and enjoy the best of the Catalan cuisine on offer. Calella is an all-year-round destination on the Costa del Maresme, thanks to a very mild climate, and water sports and outdoor ventures are always available. Set in the foothills of the beautifully rugged Montnegre Nature Park, it is a welcome stop-off destination for hikers and climbers who have spent time in the Pyrenees before travelling home. The Old Town features the 14th Century Church of Santa Maria, which is definitely worth exploring with its grand Baroque facade and a stunning interior.
Location: Officially just off the Costa Brava
Calella sits on the Costa del Maresme, with Blanes, the start point of the Costa Brava, is just 15 kilometres to the north-east along the wonderful N-II coastal road. Barcelona-El Prat International Airport, the arrival point for many visitors, is under an hour away by car, or one and a half hours by train.
Culture: Walk to the lighthouse through the old quarter
The trip to the lighthouse in the south-west of the town takes you through the old quarter of the town and past 14th and 16th Century buildings, such as the House of Salvador and the Sivilla House. The lighthouse, which can be seen from most of the town, was built in the late 1800's and has become its emblem that can be seen on many items bearing Calella's name. The two towers near the lighthouse are the remains of a military and civilian optical communication towers that were used before the advent of telegraphy.
Activities: Could you take the Ironman Challenge?
The annual sporting event of IRONMAN Barcelona is a triathlon event of swimming, cycling; and running. Open to all; it is not for the fainthearted; and will test anyone to the limits of their endurance. For those wishing a more relaxed pace, a visit to the Parc Dalmau and a walk along the urban woodland tracks will get you away from the hustle and bustle, and recharge your batteries before dancing the night away at one of the vibrant and lively clubs along the beach.
