Calgary – The Largest City in Alberta

Now home to over one million people, this Canadian town was first the home of pre-Clobis people and the Blackfoot Nation. It first became an important commercial and agricultural center in 1883, when it became a stop on the Canadian Pacific Railway. The discovery of oil in 1902 solidified it as an economic powerhouse. Now it is a large and diverse town known for not only its economic prosperity but also for its never-ending amount of things to do. Parks, gardens, malls, and arcades are just a few of the opportunities when visiting this amazing Canadian city.

Location: At the Confluence of Two Rivers

Located in the province of Alberta, Canada, at the confluence of the Elbow and Bow Rivers, it sits in a unique transition area where the Canadian Rockies end and the prairies begin. This puts it in two natural regions, Parkland and Grasslands. The city has one municipal district on each side, Rocky View County and Foothills No. 31. The climate is dry with dense vegetation around the rivers. The weather remains relatively mild, especially in the summer, staying around 24 degrees Celsius.

Business: A Leader in Economic Expansion

Calgary is known for its low unemployment rate and high GDP mostly due to the many resources available in the area, including oil and gas. However, the local economy has been diversified in recent years, causing it to be named a global city. Architectural, engineering, and technical industries have been growing, making up for 14 percent of employment. Transportation is also crucial, since WestJet and Enerjet both have headquarters in the area.

        Culture: A Canadian Cultural Capital

One of the most impressive cultural sites in the city is the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium performing arts, culture, and community facility. It hosts anything from Broadway musicals to local stage productions, and it is the resident performing space of groups such as the Alberta Ballet Company and the Calgary Opera. Art galleries are also popular, with dozens lining the streets downtown. The AGC is one of the most popular and the largest.

Activities: Shopping, Family Fun, and Recreation

Calgary is full of shopping destinations providing residents and visitors with anything they could ever need or want. For families, downtown is the place to be. Chinatown, the Glenbow Museum, and Calgary Zoo are all a unique way to spend your time here. For a more relaxing stay, try your hand at one of the many popular recreational activities, such as golf and fly-fishing.
