Cannes is a French city of around 73,000 people, mostly known for its annual film festival. This film festival was first held in 1946. The city has come a long way from a Greek fishing village in the 2nd century BC. Now, this seaside town is considered a glamorous social hub of Europe. The city is known for its air of exclusivity and actually offers plenty of more affordable and family-friendly options. People-watching is a common pastime while enjoying the cobblestone streets and awe-inspiring architecture. Walking is also one of the most common and fastest modes of transport in the city.
Location: A Lovely Commune in the French Riviera
Located in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur region of France, or PACA for short. It is a little over 36 kilometers from Nice and only 60 from the border of Italy. The city enjoys a Mediterranean climate, which means extended periods of sunny days, which just adds to its appeal to tourists. In fact, there are around 300 sunny days throughout the year, and winters are relatively mild.
Culture: Historical Villas and Mysterious Islands
A unique history makes for some interesting cultural attractions, and the Villas of Cannes is one of the most important of these. Take a trip back into 19th century France by looking at these houses, which were inspired by the owners' unique styles. Anything from medieval castles to Roman villas is represented here. Two islands also play a crucial part for the town. Île Saint-Honorat is inhabited only by monks that have lived there since the year 410. Île Sainte-Marguerite is where the famous man in the iron mask lived, and who inspired many books, movies, and legends about the man believed to be of noble blood who hid on the island for over a decade.
Activities: Luxury Sailing and Perfume
Festivals are an obvious choice when looking for something to do in Cannes, but they aren’t the only thing the city has to offer. Many cruises tour the area and offer a luxury dining experience. Another place worth visiting is Molinard, where you can take a tour to see exactly how perfume is made, and experience exotic and flowery scents. And not to forget is the Boulevard de la Croisette, the famous beach promenade, a runway for those who want to be seen.
