Over two thousand years of history are found within Chester's city walls, with architecture dating back to Roman times still on show. The city is famed for its 11th to 13th century 'Rows', a group of two-storey buildings used as shops and inns that still serve the same purpose in modern times. Straddling the River Dee, Chester was an important trading post on the English-Welsh border, until the natural silting of the riverbed forced this important trading to cease. After a period of poverty, the city was renewed, with the introduction of canals and railways during the Industrial Revolution, and a new town hall was built in a remarkable Gothic revival style. Chester today is a vibrant city that inspires visitors with its rich heritage and history.

Location: Where England meets North Wales

Situated on the border of Wales and 44 kilometres south of Liverpool via the M53 and M56 motorways, Chester has an enviable location, surrounded by heathland and agricultural land yet close enough to Liverpool and Manchester for commuting. Manchester is 71 kilometres to the north-east, and takes less than an hour by car on the M56.

Business: Home to industry and banking

Ellesmere Port, less than 15 kilometres to the north, was once a major manufacturer of Vauxhall cars and car parts in the UK, and a large employer of Chester's population. This has declined somewhat in recent years, but the site has stayed open despite restructuring, and in 2014 announced the requirement for 550 new workers at the plant to spearhead production of the new Astra. Chester is also home to a growing financial sector, with offices of the Bank of America, NFU Mutual, and HBOS plc in the city.

Culture: Explore the city on foot

Walking the two-mile circuit of the city walls will put you atop the most complete city walls in the UK- and give you a bird’s eye view of the narrow streets and cobbled alleyways as you take in the sights. Ensure you are at The Cross at mid-day to hear the proclamations of the Town Crier before making your way along the road to Chester Cathedral and its 1,000-year history. This national treasure was originally a Saxon Minster before restructured into a Benedictine Abbey, and then in 1541, the Cathedral you see now.

Activities: Enjoy a day out at the zoo

Chester Zoo has over 110 acres of landscaped gardens and wildlife enclosures for you to explore that contain over 11,000 animals and 400 different species. First opened in 1931 and registered in 1934 as a charity, it has a reputation as one of the premier wildlife sanctuary in Europe. Furthermore, it is classed one of the top 15 zoos in the world.
