Dornbirn is the largest city in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg, and is an important business and retail centre of the region. Close to the borders of Germany, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein, it welcomes many cross-border visitors who come to visit for the shopping and the nightlife. It has long been a popular choice for business travellers, due to its easy access to rail and road links and the large number of companies that operate in the city. In recent years, it has welcomed an increasing number of leisure visitors who are attracted to the close location to some excellent ski runs, the water sports on Lake Constance, and the beautiful surrounding countryside that lends itself to walking, hiking, and cycling.
Location: At the western tip of Austria
On the edge of the Eastern Alps and just a few kilometres south of the Lake Constance, Dornbirn is a short drive or rail trip from Germany, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. Friedrichshafen Airport is only 47 kilometres to the north, and Zurich Airport, the nearest international airport, is 124 kilometres to the east. The surrounding landscape offers a breathtaking glimpse of the Alps past the rolling foothills that almost surround the city.
Business: Over 1,800 companies within the city limits
Dornbirn has become a focal point for local businesses with its prime location in the Rhine Valley corridor. The A14 Autoroute runs just to the west of the city that quickly and easily connects you to the surrounding towns and cities. Within a 45-kilometre radius, you will find five convention centres that can cater for large events, and within the city itself, there are many venues that offer rooms and facilities for small to medium-sized meetings and conferences. The Kulturhaus Dornbirn can hold up between 75 to 730 persons in its range of adaptable rooms.
Culture: Modern art and classic cars
The Kunsthaus Bregenz Museum of Modern Art is an impressive piece of art in its own right. The glass cube construction of the building, designed by Peter Zumthor, hosts exhibitions of influential modern artists that are regularly rotated for maximum exposure. Modern art classic cars are also hosted in the Dornbirn Rolls Royce Museum. Take the opportunity to see over 70 of these classic vehicles that have belonged to people such as Lawrence of Arabia, the Queen Mother, and General Franco.
Activities: Hit the hills or relax in the spa
A short drive on the L48 road over the hills to the east brings you to the skiing and walking town of Schwarzenberg, which offers hundreds of kilometres of pistes and hiking trails for you to explore at your leisure. After a day of exertion, why not treat yourself to a day of relaxation and wellness in one of the health centres of Dornbirn that also specialise in the FX Mayr cure.
