Hamm – From coal mines to the 'City of Law'

The town's Oberlandesgericht is Germany's largest appeal court, and is just one of four law courts within the city limits. It is because of this that Hamm is known as the 'City of Law'. The town was founded in the early 13th century, and just over 100 years later, it was nearly wiped out when the Black Death killed all but seven families. Over the following years, it prospered and became a member of the powerful Hanseatic League of merchants in the 15th century. The first hard coal mine opened in 1901, and three more soon followed to make Hamm one of Germany's largest producers. It is still a city of heavy industry, but new business parks are producing a growing logistics trade that are proving to be of great benefit.

Location: Near Dortmund in north-eastern Germany

Dortmund is less than 40 kilometres to the south-east, and using the high speed ICE train, it takes under 20 minutes to reach, or double that in a car on the E34 road that links the two cities. Hamm, as a hanseatic city, is situated on the water, and is found at the end of the Datteln-Hamm Canal. Its port can handle ships with a length of 110 metres by almost 12 metres wide.

Business: A giant of industry in North-Rhine Westphalia

Having excellent links via rail and canal has meant that heavy industry is a major factor in Hamm's economic make up. Steel, coal, and chemical industries all have major influences on the area, but recently, with the opening of new business parks, it is becoming a major hub for the logistics trade. There are two power plants in the region, with a third due to come into commission in the next few years. For meetings, conferences, and exhibitions, the larger city of Dortmund can provide for any size of event with its range of conference and convention venues.

Culture: The Kurhaus offers a view of the city's past

The Kurhaus is a magnificent building from the late 1800s that sits amidst the lush greenery of the Kurpark gardens. Once a designated spa, which it is in the process of reinstating, the Kurhaus and gardens are a wonderful place to visit to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The park plays host to an annual festival, when the dark night skies are lit up with the glow of fireworks as music plays along to the spectacular show above.

Activities: Link history with a great day out

The Maximillian Park is on the site of the 1902 coal mine that bore the same name. It was abandoned due to repetitive flooding in 1914, and is now a wonderful area to see endangered plant species and animals. It was transformed into such a beautiful area in 1984 to launch the first State Garden Show of North-Rhine Westphalia, and it is here you will find Hamm's symbol of the 35 metre tall, glass elephant.
