Heilbronn – A Prime Location In The Wine Region

Heilbronn has an enviable location in the heart of Baden-Wurttemberg, a district renowned for its attractive scenery and iconic fairy-tale castles. Nestled in the Neckar Valley, this quaint city is a prime location for hiking and cycling, together with fishing and boating on the canal, but also has plenty of cultural activities in the centre to interest visitors. The Natural History Museum and the Science Museum are educational and fun places to interest inquisitive children, and crowds always gather in the market place to admire the astrological clock. The major attractions for visitors to the Neckar Valley, however, are the vineyards, and Heilbronn is a major winemaking city with an excellent reputation for producing inexpensive bouquets.

Location: Entrenched in the Neckar Valley

Located in the Neckar Valley in the northern territory of Baden-Wurttemberg, Heilbronn is surrounded by vineyards and forest clusters, which provide stunning scenery. Easily reached by rail from Stuttgart, Mannheim, Nuremberg, and Heidelberg, there are plenty of alternative routes, although the nearest airports are from Stuttgart 70 kilometres away and Frankfurt am Main 150 kilometres away.

        Business: A booming wine industry

Heilbronn’s engineering school has produced some well-known members of the engineering community, but the region is best known for its passion of winemaking. With over 1,300-acres of vineyards, the surrounding area is a major winegrowing capital, most of which of varieties of red grapes, although the most famous wine from here is Riesling, produced by the 900-year old Stiftsberg vineyard.

        Culture: Wine, art, and jazz

To learn about the local culture, a wine tour to some of the local vineyards gives you a varied insight to life in the region, together with the different aspects of growing–and drinking–wine. The municipal museum is a good place to stop off at, as it includes the Vogelmann art gallery and the Deutschhof Museum, which exhibits various displays of art, culture, and history. And if you fancy an evening of live music, head for the “Cave61” Jazz club.

Activities: Outdoor pursuits and educational institutes

The Neckar Valley is a wonderful region to explore, and there are numerous hiking and cycling trails to enjoy. Wine lovers should take the Wurttemberg Wine Road, but romanticists are generally steered towards the fairy-tale castles, such as the moated Wasserschloss built in the 16th Century by Heinrich von Bogenhausen. Alternatively, the science museum is a great place for kids to learn about technology, energy, the environment, and space, and with loads of interactive games and activities is a fun day out for all the family.
