With a history dating back to the 10th century, this average-sized town has become a prominent piece in Germany’s tourism jigsaw, and thanks to its bustling, high-tech business sector, is attracting international interest and boosting the economy. The rapidly modernizing pace of life in the city has lead it to “go green”, well ahead of others industrial towns, and is a leader of environmental solutions in Europe. Visitors should take advantage of its forward-thinking by making best use of its massive network of cycling and walking routes that are greatly encouraged in the city centre and throughout the surrounding countryside and woodland areas.

Location: Just east of Dusseldorf

Located in the German Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hilden is a well-known industrial town with a population of 54,737 people. Its industrial nature draws in many business visitors every year, and thanks to its location just 9 miles east of Dusseldorf, one of Germany’s major business centres, is easy to reach by rail and road.

Business: A capital of technology

The town of Hilden has a thriving business sector, and visitors can find the German headquarters of internationally renowned enterprises, such as 3M and Qiagen, situated here. Most of the local industry revolves around technology and logistics, thus, as you would expect, there are plenty of commercial centres and hotels that are fully equipped to host conferences and roadshows.

Culture: An eco-friendly industrial town

For such an industrial town, Hilden is environmentally conscious and their efforts to go green in recent years is something eco-friendly tourists will find very appealing. The town’s main street is a pedestrian zone that visitors can stroll through to explore Hilden inhibited by traffic and car fumes. Also, it is one of the few German towns that has mandated a reduction in residential speed limits to 30 km/hour, in order to encourage more cycling within the city limits. Explore one of the many cafes and bars located along the main street, or head out to Benrath Palace, a beautiful Baroque mansion located just outside the city centre.

Activities: Jazz festivals and winter markets

Throughout the year, Hilden holds a number of interesting cultural events that will be of interest to visitors, including the annual “Hildener Jazztage”, otherwise known as the Hilden Jazz Days, a bustling music festival that takes place in May and June. Winter visitors can explore the wonderful Hilden Christmas markets throughout December, and sample the delicious flavours of mulled wine.
