        Koblenz - A City with More than 2,000 Years of History

        Starting out as a military post in 8 BC, this city has been under the control of numerous cultures. Sitting within a picturesque landscape at the merging of the Moselle and Rhine rivers, the third largest city in Rhineland-Palatinate boasts an abundance of historical monuments and buildings as well as a friendly atmosphere.         The third largest city in the Rhineland-Palatinate sits in a beautifully picturesque landscape, located 100 kilometers southeast of Cologne, and about 125 kilometers northwest of Frankfurt am Main. This city is situated on both banks of the Rhine at its confluence with the Moselle River. This part of the Rhine River belongs to the Middle Rhine, which is divided into four sections. The most famous one is the Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that runs from Bingen to Koblenz.

        Culture: Historical Monuments Provide a Look Through Time

        Founded as a Roman military fortification in 8 BC, Koblenz has been the host of many cultures, and this city still shows its historical diversity. It was conquered by the Franks after the fall of the Roman empire, the Norman empire in 882, and the Eastern German kingdom, later to become the Holy Roman Empire in 925. With several historical buildings still standing, this city is a testament to history. Some of the most famous sights are the Koblenz Fortress and the Monument at the Deutsches Eck (German Corner) at the confluence of the two mighty rivers. On the outskirts, Stolzenfels Castle and Lahneck Castle make popular destinations for trips.
