One of the largest municipalities in Hanover, this town saw its first glimpses of success after the opening of the Hanover-Visselhoevede railway in 1890. A port was constructed in 1916, adding to local prosperity. Independence was finally gained in 1974. Five small communities merged in order to form this city we now know and love, and a new coat of arms was created for this new municipality. In 2009, the town celebrated its 50th birthday with an award ceremony that celebrated its 52, 000 residents who are proud to live in one of the largest rural communities in southern Lower Saxony.
