Famous for its Kneipp therapy pools that are reported to boost your immune system and, if you believe the local inhabitants, can even mend a broken heart if you drink from them, Malente is a popular town for visitors from all walks of life. In an area of outstanding natural beauty, it is a great base to discover the region’s forests and lakes that offer a wealth of activities from health spas and clinics to zip lining through the forests or sailing on the lakes. For centuries, it has been the base for the Petersen family business of curing meats, the Holstein Katenschinken. Sold throughout the world, the smoked and cured ham is still made using the traditional methods and recipes as when the family first started in business over 300 years ago.
Location: Caught in the middle of the lakes Dieksee and Kellersee
In the far north of Germany and 110 kilometres north of Hamburg, Malente is surrounded by the lakes that make the area famous for its beauty. Kiel is only 40 kilometres to the north-west and has the nearest international airport for travellers from all over Europe. The coastline of the Baltic Sea is 24 kilometres northwards and is accessible in under 30 minutes by car.
Culture: Art galleries, theatres, and a summer of concerts
Malente has a landscape and sense of peace that offers the artist a perfect inspiration at every time of year. The Anne-Dörte Meyer Gallery allows you to see the exquisite work of this local artist and partake in a day’s painting with the artist herself. During the summer months, the town plays host to the Kneipp festival that promotes the benefits of the cold-water therapy treatments. It also plays host to a number of open-air music concerts that range from a Scottish music festival to rock shows and to classical music that are all free to watch in the beautiful parks and green areas of the town.
Activities: Ideal location for walkers and golfers
The surrounding countryside is a haven for gentle walks under the shade of the forest canopy, but for those that enjoy a bit more sport as they walk, there is the Gut Waldshagen golf course just outside the town. Here, you will find a championship 18-hole course as well as a fun 6-hole public course that is just great to perfect your short game.
