Melbourne - The fastest growing city in Australia

With a diverse culture, an internationally recognised financial centre and business district, and a city chosen as the number one place to live, you can't help but want to see for yourself if what the world is saying about Melbourne, is true. First settled in 1835, it was not until the Gold Rush of 1851 that Melbourne came to prominence. Almost overnight, the population nearly doubled, and within a few years had become the highest populated city in Australia and the richest in the world. Even today, it is still growing, both financially and in terms of population, with huge investments being put into industry and housing. This has created a multi-cultural environment full of festivals, fairs, and flavours that the city is famous for. At the forefront of sport, art, and entertainment, the visitor to the city will never find a day without something to do.

Location: Mainland Australia's most southern city

With Melbourne Airport just outside the city limits, it makes it easy to visit this colourful city. Getting around is simple when you arrive with one of the most reliable public transport networks of trains, trams, buses and vehicle routes that is the envy of many cities. Being on the south coast and the Yarra River, it also benefits from a large port with regular ferry sailings to Tasmania and upriver to South Yarra and Port Phillip Bay.

Business: 25 minutes from airport to business meeting

The business centre of Melbourne is home to five of the six tallest buildings in Australia and is compared by many to New York City. With excellent travel links, getting around one of the Asia-Pacific region’s major financial centres is simple and quick. Home to many conference centres and exhibition halls, the city is able to offer all businesses a warm and professional welcome.

Culture: Contemporary art and colourful street displays

In many areas, as you walk around the city, you will find colourful and inspiring art works, all approved by the city's councillors. It is an amazing experience to turn a non-descript corner and meet head-on a display of art worthy of a place in any art gallery in the world. Many of the artists also have pieces or collections at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Arts, which has become one of the most respected galleries of living artists amongst culture enthusiasts. It has free entry and provides talks and tours around the exhibitions. It is also in very close proximity to the National Gallery.

Activities: Everything for everyone at any time

Beachfront café's and water sports centres, horse riding in the parks or thrill seeking skydivers, the range of activities is only limited by your imagination. The city offers so many choices to a traveller that to pick out just one or two would be a grave injustice to this young and exciting city. If you want to take a wildlife safari, no problem, take a balloon ride over the city, or simply relax at a spa...now you're talking. If there is just one thing to try and pick amongst all others, try the Aboriginal Heritage Walk to see how the city was built around the local population and how it embraces their history today.
