Maastricht is a small, international town of about 120,000 inhabitants. Its location in the southernmost corner of Holland has allowed it to play a large role in European history, and it remains a popular place for international conferences and agreements. It is here that the Maastricht Treaty was signed, resulting in the development of the European Union. As one of the oldest cities in Holland and a place severely damaged by WWII, Maastricht is now a blend of medieval and modern characteristics. Much of what was Maastricht has been redeveloped, but the town still maintains its old-world charm and romantic allure. The large international student population and location of this city make Maastricht a culturally diverse place for visitors to adore.

Location: The southernmost corner of the Netherlands

Maastricht is located in the province of Limburg in the southernmost corner of Holland. It is divided by the Meuse River and sits just minutes away from the borders of Belgium (to the west) and Germany (to the east). The metro area is served by the A2 and A79, the Maastricht train station, and the Maastricht Aachen Airport.

Business: A hub for conference, congress, and business

Maastricht may be a small town but its business is booming. The three main sectors are life sciences, chemicals & materials, and health & smart services. The area is a base to a number of international corporations, including Hewlett Packard, Vodafone, and DHL. Also, you will find more than a dozen institutions and centres that are perfect for your business meetings and conferences.

Culture: Historic & modern, international & diverse

This is a city with a long history and one that has seen a lot. After suffering the horrors of WWII, Maastricht eventually rebuilt itself, and in 1992 was the location for the Maastricht Treaty, which resulted in the establishment of the European Union. It now sits as a city filled with an international population of expats and students. On any given day, one can hear up to 5 languages just by walking through the narrow, winding streets of the city centre! Here, you’ll find plenty of old fortifications and museums, which detail the rich history of this city.

Activities: Rivers, parks, and shopping!

One of the highlights of Maastricht is the Meuse River, which divides the city in two. Be sure to take a long walk down this stunning body of water and admire both sides of this historic city. Weave in and out of beautiful parks and be sure to check out the district of Binnenstad, where you’ll find the three largest squares in Maastricht containing plenty of cafes, restaurants, shopping, and more!
