The town's location on the German-Swiss border provides the opportunity to explore this area of outstanding natural beauty. Trips to nearby Lake Constance draw many visitors to the area. Rich in history, this rural idyll affords the chance to get away from it all in stunning scenery. The town is also known as the City of Sport. One of the many events that take place is the annual Singen half-marathon. The highway, which traverses through a tunnel under Hohentwiel, gives you the opportunity to go in search of other nearby sights around Lake Constance and over the Swiss border. The town is a true mecca for people looking for relaxation and that true feeling of escaping every day city life.

Location: A strategically positioned rural paradise

Singen is located in the south-west of Baden-Wuerttemberg, just north of the Swiss border and close to Lake Constance. This is an area of outstanding natural beauty yet it is still conveniently located close to highways and has good rail links to Stuttgart and Zurich. Nestled above Singen is Hohentwiel, an extinct volcano. The ruins of a fortress, which was built in 914 AD, can still be seen on the top. It was destroyed by French troops in the Napoleonic War.

Culture: A history aficionado's dream

A visit to the town's information centre is a highlight. Located halfway up Hohentwiel, it outlines the town's rich history. There is also an 18th century model of the fortress as it looked when it was built. 'Art in a public place' showcases many varied sculptures in an art trail. There are also theatres, an art museum, and an archaeological museum. For history buffs, a visit to the monastery on the island of Reichenau is a must-see as is Tengen, the Roman estate, now an open-air museum and one of the largest excavated Roman sites in southern Germany.

Activities: Savour the fresh mountain air

For those who revel in nature and the outdoors, take a visit to the nearby Mainau flower island in Lake Constance. The largest waterfall in Europe, the Rhine Falls, is also close by, just over the Swiss border. The Upper Danube valley and the Black Forest are havens for hikers as are the Hegau Mountains famous for the imposing Hohentwiel Fortress, which lies on top.
