This Greek city has been around since ancient times, even coming in contact with Persian King Xerxes. The Gyzi brothers took over the island in 1207 AD, building up a small Venetian fortress to protect against invasion by pirates. The capital however, was moved in the 14th century. The city came into the spotlight again in the 18th century when the Evangelistria monastery was built by monks from Athos. It became a hide out for Greek rebels during the Greek War of Independence. In fact, this monastery had the very first flag of Greece, which was created and hoisted in 1807. The island capital moved back shortly thereafter. Today it is gaining popularity as a tourist destination after part of the popular film Mamma Mia was filmed here.
