Sorrento - Try Famous Limoncello while Admiring the Views
Sorrento is a popular tourist destination in southern Italy that overlooks the Bay of Naples. From the town, visitors can enjoy picturesque views of Naples, Mount Vesuvius, and the Isle of Capri. The famous Amalfi Drive connects Sorrento with Amalfi along the high cliffs along the Tyrrhenian Sea. In addition to its famous views, it is also well known for its limoncello. Settlers have been drawn to this location since ancient times, with the oldest ruins dating to about 600 BCE. Many of the older buildings remain in the city, especially in the old town, providing a charming atmosphere in which to stroll.

This coastal town is connected to the Amalfi Coast, but it actually lies on the Sorrentine Peninsula across the bay from Naples. There are ferries and hydrofoils with service to Amalfi, Naples, Capri, Positano, and Ischia. There is also boat service from various ports from the Sorrentine Peninsula and the Bay of Naples. The closest airports are Naples International and Salerno Costa d'Amalfi Airport. It is also accessible by train.

Culture: Historic Architecture Set Amidst Lovely Coastal Views
The old town still has many of the beautiful, older buildings along its Roman-era streets. The main street of old town is Via di San Cesareo, which provides a lovely stroll with some shops and restaurants. Across a ravine divide lays the newer town with several hotels. The Sedile Dominova is one of the best architectural specimen in town. It was built in 1349 and features a 16th century trompe l'oeil cupola. The Church of San Francesco has free art exhibits and concerts in the summer. The Cathedral of Sorrento was built over many years and features various architectural styles.

Activities: Day Trips to Pompeii and the Isle of Capri
There are no real beaches in Sorrento, but visitors can enjoy the views from the cliffs sitting on rented lounge chairs along the piers. There are beautiful walking paths with views of the ruins of the Roman Villa di Pollio or the coastline. The ruins of Pompeii are nearby, as is Mount Vesuvius, making it easy to go on a day trip. Driving along the famous Amalfi Drive provides gorgeous views of the coastline and surrounding areas.
