The municipality of Wangerland has existed in its present form since 1972, when 6 communities—Hohenkirchen, Hooksiel, Minsen Förrien, Horumersiel-Schillig, Tettens, and Waddewarden joined together. It is the northernmost point of the administrative district of Friesland, with approximately 10,200 inhabitants and it is predominantly rural. In recent years, it has become an increasingly important tourist destination, with kilometres-long stretches of white sandy beaches, a well-developed network of cycling paths, and easy-to-reach towns and villages in the region that draw in thousands of holidaymakers each year. From Wangerland, the ferry ports with passage to the East Frisian Islands as well as larger towns like Wilhelmshaven or Wittmund are just a stone’s throw away, making the area a preferred destination for those who want to combine lazing on the beach with sightseeing and city tours.
Location: A coastal spot with wide open spaces
Wangerland borders the North Sea to the north and east, the town of Wittmund, and to the west, south, and south-east, the towns of Jever, Schortens, and Wilhelmshaven (approximately 20 kilometres away). Its seat is in the village Hohenkirchen. It is on the A29 motorway, and there are several bus and train connections.
