Later, it became a Bavarian settlement around St. Peter's Church. A new part of town was later founded and became the current city center, which is now filled with offices, restaurants, and shops. This is also where most of the local nightlife is located. Though the town is small, it has 45,000 residents and many exciting activities to partake in, including many annual festivals and events, and the only zoo in East Bavaria.
Straubing is the seat of the Straubing-Bogen district, and is located on the Danube River. It is close to the Bavarian Forest between Passau and Regensburg. The local landscape is made up mostly of hills and mountains along with thick forests that the Danube runs through. In this part of southern Germany, the climate consists of particularly cold winters and milder to hot summers.
For the last ten years, this city's economy has become increasingly more important to the area. Historically, agricultural trade and industrial businesses ruled the local economy. Storage plants, breweries, and conventional brickworks are standing side-by-side with mechanical engineering and textile companies. The trade and service sectors are also becoming key money makers with increasing shopping opportunities popping up everywhere.
Straubing has several festivals that take place each year, giving locals and visitors something to do. The Gäubodenfest, the second largest folk festival in Bavaria, was founded in 1812 to organize an annual meeting around the Danube. It contains several beer tents as well as roller coasters and carousels. One of the greatest Jazz festivals in Europe, the Bluetone, also takes place here. However, there is nothing like touring the city and viewing the many Gothic buildings still in existence, like Herzogsschloss castle or Church of St. Vitus.
There is no shortage of unique eateries in the area, offering your taste buds new experiences everywhere you go. Both ice cream parlors and Brotzeitstüberl pubs offer flavorful and unique pastries from professional chefs, and Bavarian pubs and restaurants are around every corner. In the summer, beer gardens and open-air eateries become popular. For those who want to get closer to nature, a campsite exists on the Danube from April to October.
