The Spa Gardens and the Old Town face each other across the Ilmenau River, and a day spent exploring the two areas shows the town off at its best. With half-timber framed houses and buildings facing old monuments and squares, the Old Town has plenty of attractions as well as some great bars and restaurants to sample when you feel the need to sit back and enjoy a tasty meal. It is also a well-known and well-visited spa resort with many people coming just to enjoy the iodine-saline thermal baths in one of the health centres of the town.
Hamburg is around 80 kilometres to the north-west of the town, and offers excellent communication links via, road, rail, and air to the rest of Germany and beyond. Surrounded by gentle hills of forests and the open fields of the surrounding farmland, Bad Bevensen is in an excellent location to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The river that flows through the town, the Ilmenau, is a tributary of the mighty River Elbe that flows further to the north.
The nearest large conference and trade fair centre is 75 kilometres away in Hamburg, but the hotels of the town offer conference and business meeting facilities that can cater for up to 250 delegates. With excellent rail and road links, Bad Bevensen is a town you can fall back to after a hard day at the office and take advantage of the treatments and spas that are on offer.
The Iron Age settlements at nearby Jastorf are an indicative glimpse into the region’s past and rich cultural history. From these humble beginnings, the town grew through the Middle Ages, and two important monasteries were built. The Ebstorf monastery has a famous 13th century world map, a copy of which is displayed in its museum. The monastery was almost destroyed in 1871 with only one building surviving intact, which some have stated as the most important—the brewery. The rest of this impressive structure was rebuilt in a Baroque style, and is a wonderful piece of architecture in its own right.
Golfers are well catered for with a 9-hole course and an 18-hole course to enjoy. There is also a wide range of hiking trails that take you up into the hills and forests that surround the town, with some circular routes criss-crossing the river as you make your way through the Kurpark gardens and skirt the old town before heading out to nature again. For those just seeking relaxation, a day at the one of the spa centres could be just what the doctor ordered, with thermal baths, saunas, and massage treatments all available.
