Surprisingly though, it dated a city as far back as 10 BC. Many famous figures have found it interesting to say the least. In fact, it was the favorite town of Emperor Henry IV. Notable residents are basketball player Elias Harris and German-American journalist Henry Villard. Today, its heritage as a religious city and Roman cultural hotspot is intact in the many historical sites that the almost 50,000 residents enjoy daily, including many cathedrals and the impressive town hall.
This German city sits beside the Rhine River just south of Mannheim. It is landlocked by France and Luxembourg to the west, which gives easy access to the rest of Europe. The temperate climate means moderate summers and wet winters. The lands are green and rich with many trees and flatlands as well.
Once part of the Holy Roman Empire, Speyer's main attraction is the Speyer Cathedral, which holds the tombs of Roman emperors and German kings. The UNESCO World Heritage Site towers above the city and makes a wonderful destination for a day trip. There are also many more historical churches and an old city gate that may interest history buffs. For a more recent look into history, City Hall still stands at it was in the 18th century.
This glorious city is home to some of the most delicious cuisine around. In fact, culinary tours are often held around the city to sample some of the world-renowned dishes. One of the most famous culinary events is the Emperor's Table, held in the second weekend of August. A whole street is filled with a table where everyone eats in true royal fashion. The Speyer Brezelfest in the second weekend of July attracts more than 250,000 visitors in just 4 days. It is the biggest folk festival on the Upper Rhine, and celebrates regional traditions in bakery and handicrafts with fun rides, parades, and a race. For those wanting a closer look at nature, hiking in the Palatinate provides a trek through deep forests.
