It has a wonderful small town feel, and a stroll through the cobbled streets amongst the timber-frame houses and the 1,000-year old cathedral is a perfect escape form modern high-rise cities. Visitors to Minden should not pass over a trip to the Aqueduct–the second largest of its kind in Europe. The water bridge crosses over the point where the Mittelland Canal meets with the Weser River and provides remarkable landscape. A few kilometres outside the town is the “Gateway to Westphalia,” where you will find the memorial of Kaiser Wilhelm I together with astonishing scenery in the rolling hills.
Minden is located in the north-east North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany. Straddling the River Weser, the town is divided by waterways, and is the close to the intersection of the Mittelland Canal. The closest airport is Hanover-Langenhagen 74 kilometres away.
The most famous brand to stem from Minden is Melitta coffee who have their headquarters stationed here. The quaint town makes an ideal base to explore the Westphalia region, and there are plenty of comfortable and affordable hotels offering great service.
The earliest recorded date of Minden is 798 AD, although historians believe the town was founded around 200 AD. The oldest standing relic is the Cathedral, which was built shortly after the region was conquered by the House of Charlemagne, sometime around the 9th Century. Visitors are encouraged to take the city tour, which leaves at 3 pm from the Town Hall in the large market square. Other tours are also available, including the fascinating Prussia tour.
Minden is situated on the cusp of the Weser Hills and provides the perfect gateway to explore the beauty of the surrounding region. Trekkers should head for the Wiehen Hills to the south, where you can take several different routes and discover the Great Memorial of Kaiser-Wilhelm, the first German Emperor who died in 1888. You can also explore the region by water on the steamboat “Wappen von Minden”.
