Cairns Ironman Event Traffic Alert: Captain Cook Highway closed Palm Cove-Port Douglas, 5:30am-5:30pm, June 16th. Alternative route via Mulligan and Kennedy Hwy takes 3.5-4hrs to/from airport. ROAD WORKS AND HIGHWAY CLOSURE: Due to necessary road repairs, a section of the Captain Cook Highway between the Rex Lookout and Turtle Cove, Wangetti, will be closed to all traffic from 15 May - 22 July 2024 between 9pm - 4am, weather and construction conditions permitting. Traffic will be let through the roadworks site from both ends at 11pm and 1.30am. Full closures will occur on the nights of Sunday 19 May and Monday 20 May where the scope of works will mean traffic CANNOT be let through. The Department of Transport and Main Roads anticipates further full closure dates may be required. The dates of full closures are dependent on progress of works, weather, materials supply, and construction conditions. No night works will occur on the following dates: 24 May - 26 May – Road will remain open for Port Douglas Carnivale1 June, 8 June, 15 June (Road will remain open to allow access ahead of the Ironman event), 16 June (Changed traffic conditions and closures will be in place.) Works will resume 17 June, 22 June, 29 June and 6 July 2024. The Cairns Ironman event is scheduled for Sunday 15 June 2025. As
