The historic city was funded around 800 AD, and parts of the ancient town wall are still standing, including a few of its defensive towers. The Martinskirche is the oldest church, but its importance was replaced in the late 12th century by a basilica with a choir and a tower. Both are well worth a visit! By day, visitors stroll in the extensive pedestrian zone within the medieval city wall ring and around the lovely Alter Markt (Old Market) square, traditionally the centre of public life with fairs and festival lifts, intertwined with political and church events. Here you can take a leisurely break in a beach chair and enjoy coffee and cake at one of the many inviting cafes. For nightlife, take your pick–a host of theatre performances and live music concerts offer options for everyone.
Euskirchen is situated 23 km from Bonn and 43 km from Cologne. The nearest major airport is Cologne-Bonn Airport (CGN), 53 km from the centre of the town. Euskirchen can also be reached easily by rail or the excellent network of motorway that connect it with all major cities in the area.
Euskirchen is surrounded by farming land, and the open fields serving agricultural purposes continue to be a boon for the locality. The many farmers from this region grow sugar beet and have supplied sugar since 1879. Globally known industrial enterprises, such as Procter & Gamble and Miele have found a home at the town's industrial and commercial sites.
The 1,000-year history of the Eifel region imparts extensive knowledge about living conditions in the past, mostly the Arloff Castle, a 13th century farmstead surrounded by a moat; it was enlarged in the 15th century to become a castle with a four-storey tower, and a residential house was built onto it in 1699. Today the castle and estate have been preserved and are still used for farming. Nowhere else will you find so many historical buildings–with some 50 castles or more—concentrated in an area the size of Euskirchen.
The district of Euskirchen is nestled in picturesque scenery, and with over 500 km of cycle paths with well signposted routes, hiring a bike to explore the many castles in the vicinity is an invigorating and rewarding experience. Visitors can enjoy a stress-free and varied nature experience along the rivers and through deep cut valleys taking in bridges, castles, and old monasteries. Trekking is another option, and with a constantly changing scenery in the unique low mountain range, there are plenty of challenging walks offer stunning views.
