The city of Hurghada one of the largest commercial and tourist centre on the Red Sea, 450 km south of Cairo. With its own International Airport, the city has been a major commercial centre for American, European and Arab investors since the 1980s. And it's still developing. New business hotels in Hurghada spring up every few months in response to the demand for luxury business class accommodation and meeting spaces.
Located on the Red Sea and an important port, the city takes its name from the word for 'jetty'. This is appropriate as it is increasingly a launchpad for start-ups, and an energetic resort city. The Arabian desert fans out to the west of Hurghada, and its population of Bedouin villages are just a camel's ride away. If you are interested in ancient Egypt, you can hop on one of the excursion buses travelling to the Nile Valley, and discover the pyramids, one of the world's wonders.
This is a major hub outside of Cairo, which, at five hours away, is still well within range. Business travellers to Cairo will often split their time between the cities, spending some time in Hurghada to counteract the hustle and bustle of business life in Cairo. A large proportion of Hurghada's economy is tourism-related, but it is rapidly becoming a niche location for start-ups and entrepreneurial activity. A newly published Business Directory is contributing to the collaborative atmosphere of the start-up community here.
Venture from your Hurghada hotel to the Dahar district of the old town to experience a vivid bazaar, filled with dizzying quantities of souvenirs and historic buildings. A unique way of seeing the desert on safari is to hire a dirt bike for the day. The water here is warm and inviting for swimmers and snorkellers, but if you prefer, you can see the underwater world in a glass bottomed boat, while enjoying a drink in the sun. The truly adventurous can jump aboard a submarine and be submerged entirely, amongst the fantastic coral formations of the Red Sea. But if that's not your style, Hurghada has a handful of superb golf courses where you can practice your swing in the stunning Egyptian weather.
