Although there is dispute among experts about its origins, legend has it that an ancient settlement by the name of Wendingstedt lay a few hundred meters off the current shoreline. Some scientists believe this settlement is merely legend, but others believe in its validity. For centuries, the area consisted of only eight farmsteads with residents living off the land, making their living by farming and fishing. However, in the early 19th century it began to change, as the area became a popular seaside resort. In 1960, it became a recognized seaside spa. Today, this charming seaside town attracts many visitors to its shore to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
This island town is located on Sylt, north of Westerland in North Frisia, part of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. It is part of a municipality Wenningstedt-Braderup, which includes Braderup, located on the Wadden Sea side of the island. The majority of commercial buildings are located in the Wenningstedt side of the municipality. Visitors can arrive to the island by train, ferry, and airplane.
Near the town is a dolmen, the Denghoog dolmen, which dates back to about 3,000 BCE. It has twelve supporting stones with a ceiling of stone slabs. This ancient site has been open for the public to visit since the early 1900s. The old town still has its old, German-village charm. Around the pond, buildings are required to have thatched roofs in order to match the surrounding area. More modern buildings are built closer to the beach. There are several museums on the island, including the nearby Frisian House, where visitors travel back in time to see how people lived when the house was first constructed in 1739.
There is a nature reserve located in the Braderup heath in the north-eastern side of town. It borders the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park and has numerous hiking trails in which to enjoy the beautiful natural landscape. The village pond is preserved as a place for recreation. Wenningstedt's sandy beach draws many visitors for relaxing and sunbathing. The stimulating climate of the North Sea area makes this town perfect for enhancing one's health and immune system.
