The area to the west of Plymouth’s Sutton Harbour is known as the Barbican, and with over 200 listed buildings, it is one of the most historic parts of the city. Indeed, it is thought that this is where the Pilgrim Fathers first set sail to the USA in 1620 aboard the Mayflower. The area is also home to many great restaurants and boutique shops, as well as the National Marine Aquarium and Barbican Theatre. Whilst in town, embrace the waterside setting by embarking on a fishing trip, or a relaxing cruise along the bay.
In recent years, Plymouth has received a great deal of investment, helping to boost the city's image and appeal for investors. The Business Improvement District and Vision for Plymouth initiatives have helped to regenerate the city, with new shopping centres, a new boulevard, and a cruise terminal all being built. You'll also find Plymouth Science Park, housing a high number of companies, and the respected Plymouth University. When it comes to events, there's the large conference hall in Plymouth Pavilions. Key events in the calendar include the annual Devon Business Show.
To the south of the city centre lies Plymouth Hoe, an open public space with views of Plymouth Sound. Stroll along the Hoe and admire its iconic landmark, Smeaton’s Tower, a former lighthouse that has been re-erected on land as a visitor attraction. Climb its 93 steps and be rewarded with breathtaking views of the ocean.
With an historic connection to gin, Plymouth is home to the Plymouth Gin Distillery. Visit the distillery which has been producing the spirit since 1793 to learn about how it's made. For outstanding fresh seafood, head to The Samphire Bush restaurant and sample refined dishes such as chargrilled cuttlefish or seared scallops.
