That is now thought likely to have been a fake, but evidence has been found of man-made objects from the Stone-Age in the region. In more recent times, it became a town of industry, with rail-carriage manufacture and the United Rayon Factory supplying a steady stream of employment to the inhabitants until their closures in the year 2000. It has been struggling to retain its independent status with the city of Frankfurt since the district reforms of 1974. To avoid this amalgamation, Kelsterbach joined the Umlandverband Frankfurt association to keep its status as a town.
Just three minutes by the excellent rail link is all it takes to reach Frankfurt Airport, and another ten minutes on that to reach the city centre. It is found on the edge of Frankfurt Forest in the south-west of the city, on the bank of the River Main where the tributary Kelster joins it.
The town is home to many businesses associated with Frankfurt Airport. The main commercial area is located on the airport's edges and provides logistics support via companies such as Lufthansa, Schenker AG, and the major international courier services. For business travellers, it has fast rail links to Frankfurt and is close to major exhibition and conference centres, which can be reached by the nearby Autobahn and federal highways.
Kelsterbach has over 90 sports clubs and organisations that play in local and national tournaments and leagues, but the main cultural event takes place on the first Sunday of September. This is the day of the traditional church fair that gathers visitors from far and wide to the town, with many staying in the area for the Town Festival that takes place the following week.
Being in close proximity to both woodlands and river provides the outdoor enthusiast a host of opportunities to have fun and perhaps try out something new at one of the many clubs. There are numerous walks, nature trails, and guided tours in the Frankfurt Forest, and the banks of the River Main provide the water sport devotee a place to practice their skills.
