It received municipal rights as early as 1237, and today is the largest town within its district. Known as the Forest Town because of the forests and natural landscapes surrounding it, this small city has many attractions to visit. It features beautiful architectural examples from its centuries of existence, as well as museums and art galleries. It also provides many striking natural landscapes, including caves and lakes in which to hike, bike, or otherwise relax. The town also features shops that range from large department stores to small boutiques in the pedestrian retail zone.
In the northern part of the Sauerland region in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia lies Iserlohn, near the Ruhr River. The city is accessed by train from Dortmund or Essen. It is accessible to travelers on the A46, so you can easily find it by car. To get around town, many people use the local buses, cycle, or walk.
The Danzturm tower has amazing views of the surrounding area, including the forest and other natural beauties, as well as the town itself, which features many examples of historical architecture. The Upper Town Church, or Oberste Stadtkirche, features a beautiful example of a Gothic winged altar. The town's museum is a fine example of Baroque architecture. Many buildings in the town date from the Middle Ages and are fine examples of the traditional German half-timbered houses.
Iserlohn is home to the famous Dechenhohle, or Dechen Cave, a beautiful dripstone show cave with stalactites and stalagmites. It was found in the late 1800s when building the railway. Visitors can walk through 360 meters of the caves and enjoy the natural formations. There is also a municipal forest, the Iserlohn Woods, perfect for walking through and enjoying the natural wonders. If you want to enjoy even more of the natural surroundings, there are over 200 kilometers of footpaths through the Kesbern hills.
