This is a clean, organised, and beautiful Bavarian retreat, with an idyllic lakeside aspect. Just 35 km from the city of Munich, it is a world away from the hustle and bustle of downtown the Bavarian capital city, and one of the most popular suburban areas in Bavaria. It has recently become popular among retirees as well, due to its low crime rate and relaxed pace of life. Starnberg earned a place in German history when King Ludwig II of Bavaria drowned under suspicious circumstances in Lake Starnberg on 13 June, 1886. Visitors can see the monument at the site of his death, and speak to locals about the various conspiracy theories surrounding the tragic event.
Starnberg’s affluence owes much to its location. Set along the banks of Lake Starnberg, it is a peaceful and fertile area, which also happens to be within commuting distance of Munich. There is a regular train service to and from Munich city centre, and a ‘lake fleet’, which traverses the water.
Starnberg is no tourist trap, but it is extremely popular with day-trippers and visitors who come to relax by the lake and enjoy the fresh air and excellent amenities of the city. As a result, tourism provides a regular source of income for many residents, although the majority of Starnberg’s locals earn their money in Munich, before travelling home to the lake each day.
Situated in the south of Germany, Starnberg enjoys a temperate climate- all the better for making the most of the lakeside living! Each year, on the 13th June, there is a memorial service for King Ludwig II at the site of his death - this offers a rare insight into the traditions of the city, and is an eerily beautiful experience.
Starnberg is a relaxing place, which doesn’t have a lot to offer adrenalin junkies. Hire a bicycle and travel along one of the many gentle cycling paths around the lake, or hike around the hills for a stunning view of the city. Or, of course, you can hire a boat and spend the day on Lake Starnberg itself, or simply jump straight into the clear water when it gets too warm.
