There is something charmingly old fashioned about the town–the buildings are weathered by years of sea spray, the pier and promenade are throwbacks to the Victorian days, and visitors can travel around the area in the Molli–a beautiful narrow gauge steam train. As well as being a relaxing coastal retreat, Kühlungsborn has experienced its fair share of history. During the Berlin Wall years, the town was used by East Germans seeking to escape into the west of the country, and the Baltic Sea Watchtower was erected in an effort to keep an eye on the coastal border movements. Since reunification, Kühlungsborn has been extensively renovated, and continues to be a popular holiday resort among Germans from across the country.
Kühlungsborn is situated at the very north of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern of Germany, right against the Baltic Coast. Denmark lies just 100 km across from Kühlungsborn beach, while the nearest German city is Rostock, just 25 km away. It is served by a small airport at Rostock and the much larger Hamburg Airport, as well as numerous ferries and boats by sea.
The tourist industry has fuelled the growth of Kühlungsborn’s over the past century, and it is set to remain an economic fixture in the foreseeable future. Over the past few decades, there has been increased investment in the town, and new hotels have sprung up, offering four and five star facilities, spas, and luxury mini breaks.
Kühlungsborn is the sort of place you go to get away from it all. While history buffs will appreciate the significance of the watchtower and the old railway line, for most visitors this is a place for long walks on the beach, swimming in the sea, and relaxing with loved ones. The pier is one of the longest in Germany, and makes a gorgeous photo motif for hobby photographers.
Make the most of the fresh sea air by exploring the Kühlungsborn area on foot. The town is part of the E9 European long distance path, and there are many other accessible walking routes to be found around the beaches. Most of the main hotels are well kitted out with gym and spa activities, for visitors in need of a bit more activity.
