In the 1800s, it quickly became the popular resort town that it is today, as guests of the Prince of Putbus began to visit and bathe in the outflow of the Schmachter See lake. The first spa house was opened in 1890 under the name of Kurhaus Binz. After Germany reunified, the city went through some amazing changes, being modernized and restored. It is a popular place for Europeans to holiday where they can visit a plethora of historical hotels and villas, but there is no doubt that the main attraction is the pier, which is over 350 meters long.
Binz is on the eastern coast of Rügen Island in the Baltic Sea. It is surrounded by the Schmatcher See lake and the bay of Prorer Wiek. Much of the surrounding landscape features rolling hills while other areas barely hit above sea level. The weather is pretty stable year-round with minimal rain falling evenly throughout the year. This is why so many people come to relax in the sun on the beach.
Most of this pretty town's culture revolves around its status as a famous resort. It started as a spa and sea destination where the rich and royal came, but in the 20th century, tourism boomed. The focus is on the beach and all it has to offer including fishing, swimming, and a 370-meter long pier. Around town, visitors can discover all the traditional architecture used in the many hotels, resorts, and shopping destinations. It takes the sightseer back to 19th century Germany.
While the obvious main attraction of Binz is the beautiful beach courtesy of the Baltic Sea, there are plenty of other activities to choose from. Hiking and sightseeing are combined when you journey through The Granitz and the Beech Forest. Hiking through this beautiful forest will take you on the trek of your life. At the end, you'll find the castle known as the Granitz Hunting Lodge, which once belonged to the royal Putbus family.
